Colocasia leaves Patode

Ingredients: 10-15 big Colocasia leaves without any tear or cracks, 2 bowl chana dal and 1 bowl rice soaked (overnight)and grinded, 1 teaspoon hing, 1/2 teaspoon red chilli(or acc to taste), 1 tablespoon dry mango powder, 3 tablespoon mustard oil, 2 teaspoon garam masala, 1 tsp hing, salt acc to taste

Taro is also known as colocasia or elephant year. It is found in tropical Asia. Taro leaves help boost our body’s immunity. Taro roots are also rich in fiber. It has been known since ancient times that taro leaves can be used for treating various diseases like arthritis, blood pressure, diarrhea, skin disorders, The extracts have been found to contain several pharmacological properties. It has anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties.

Method: Wash the Colocasia leaves and keep aside. Take the grinded batter of chana daal and rice add all the spices and mix well. Clean your kitchen counter for making of patodas. Place the leaves with the vein side facing you on a clean dry surface and remove the veins using a sharp knife. Place a leaf with the tip facing towards you, apply little mixture and spread it using your fingers to make an even layer.

Apply little mixture on another leaf and place it in on the first leaf with the tip in the opposite direction. Continue the procedure for 3 more leaves. Fold the leaf around 1” from one side. Apply the mixture on it. Repeat the same with the other side. Fold the leaf around 1” from your side. Apply the  paste on it with your fingers.

Roll it up tightly, while applying mixture with each fold. Keep aside. Repeat with the remaining leaves and mixture to make more rolls and steam in a steamer for 20 to 25 minutes or till it becomes firm. When cool, cut into 12 mm. (½”) thick slices. Keep aside Take 1 tablespoon mustard oil on a nonstick or normal tawa and add these slices. Keep turning them and remove when they become crisp and brown in colour. Serve them hot with butter or chutney.
