 Onion Chopping Hacks

If the weepy mess that chopping onions induces is a major put-off for your culinary sojourn then look no further for multiple solutions to your grievance!

  • Refrigerate your onions for 15 minutes before chopping them
  • Chop the onions under an air-conditioner vent or a fan so that the air draft blows the sulphur gas away from your eyes
  • Use a sharp knife as it causes less damage to the onion cells thereby releasing fewer irritants
  • Hold a slice of bread in your mouth while cutting onions to stall the tear-inducing gases from reaching your eye
  • Cut off the roots of the onions first as they contains a higher concentration of enzymes and sulphuric compounds
  • Dhruvi Thaker shares her no-tears onion chopping tip “Onions form an invariable part of our salads so chopping them is a part-and-parcel of my daily routine. I’ve experimented with a lot of hacks and my tried-and-tested no-tears recipe for cutting onions is to slice them as close to an open flame as is possible.” Fire and water crossing swords, eh?
  • Slice off the onion tops and then soak the onions in water for about 20 minutes … albeit this may detract the niche flavour that onions are renowned for; and also make the onions tad slippery (do be extra careful while wielding the knife)

So go ahead and take your pick from any of these hacks and fearlessly and tearlessly make onions an innate part of your salads and your meals!
