Andhra Style- Tomato Khichdi

  • rice
  • toor dal
  • salt
  • turmeric powder
  • onion
  • tomato
  • mustard oil
  • black cardamom
  • green cardamom
  • cloves
  • cinnamon stick
  • cumin seeds
  • curry leaves
  • tamarind paste
  • jaggery
  • hing
  • garlic
  • ghee
  • water
  • green chili

Instructions

  • First, wash the rice and toor dal. and soak it for 10 minutes. then chop onions and tomato in slices. crush the garlic.
  • take a pressure cooker. add oil, heat it for 30 seconds on high flame. then add hing and other whole spices. saute it for 10 seconds on low flame.
  • then add onions, green chilies, garlic and cook for 5 minutes on medium flame. after that add salt and turmeric powder.
  • now, add tomatoes and cook it until it turns mushy.
  • after that add rice and dal. saute it for 20 seconds.
  • add water. use the same bowl for the entire measuring process. close the lead and pressure cook it for 3 to 4 whistles on high flame.
  • turn off the heat and leave it to release the pressure. then add tamarind paste and jaggery. give a nice stir.
  • garnish it with some ghee. And serve it with achar and raita. Your Andhra-style tomato khichdi is ready to serve. it takes only 15 to 20 minutes.
