Moong dal payasam

Ingredients

  • Moong dal - 1 big cup
  • Powdered jaggery - 3/4 cup
  • Poppy seeds - 2tbsp
  • Fresh coconut ( grated) - 1/4 cup
  • Cashew nuts - 6
  • Elaichi powder - 1 tsp
  • Dry fruits ( few almonds & dry grapes)
  • Ghee - 1 tbsp

Instructions

  • Heat ghee in a thick bottomed pan and fry almonds and dry grapes. Keep aside.
  • In the same pan ,saute moong dal for few minutes. Remove from pan.
  • Boil water (about 2 cups ) in a vessel. Add moong dal and cook till soft.
  • Meanwhile, make a fine paste of poppy seeds, fresh coconut and cashew nuts using little water.
  • Once moong dal is cooked and soft, add this grinded paste and jaggery powder.
  • Finally add cardamom powder and garnish with dry fruits.

Notes/Tips

Adjust the consistency of payasam by adding more water if thick. Amount of jaggery also can be altered according to the sweetness desired.
