Ingredients

  • MOONG DAL or yellow split moong dal/ beans 1/4cup
  • Oats 1/2cup
  • Mixed chopped veggies ( carrot, beans, peas) 3/4
  • Onions( optional) 2 tsp
  • Water 1,3/4 to 2 cups water ( for rolled oats needs more
  • For tempering
  • Ghee 1tsp
  • Crushed ginger 1tsp
  • Jeera 1tsp
  • Mustard 1/2tsp
  • Chilli slit 1
  • Peppaerpowder 1/2tsp
  • Salt As per taste
  • Hing Pinch
  • Curry leaves 2 for tempering
  • Turmeric 1/2tsp
  • Tomatoes optional

Instructions

  • If cooking in a pot, cook until the dal has soft cooked adding more water as needed. When the pressure goes off open the lid. If desired can add little more ghee. Serve oats khichdi warm.
  • Pour ghee to a hot pot or cooker. Add cumin. When they sizzle, saute ginger and chili till it turns aromatic. Do not burn. Add hing if using. Next put in the onions and and saute for about 2 to 3 minutes.
  • If using tomato then saute until tomatoes turn completely soft and mushy. The raw smell of the tomatoes has to go away. You can also add little chili powder if you prefer.
  • Drain the water from dal and add it to the pot. Fry for about 2 to 3 minutes till the dal smells good. Add oatmeal, salt and turmeric. Fry for about 2 minutes.
  • Pour water. You can adjust the quantity of water to make it mushy or slightly grainy. On a medium flame, pressure cook for 3 whistles. Dal has to cook completely.
